Cigar Cutter
Find YOUR Cigar Cutter
Cigar cutters are used to remove or penetrate the cap of a cigar before smoking it. The type of cut to be made depends on personal preference, the size and shape of the cigar, and the type of filler tobacco in the cigar.
There are four types of cut, the straight cut (double-bladed guillotine or cigar scissors), the V-cut, the hole cut (punch cut) and the "Shuriken" or multi-slit cut.
Experienced cigar smokers do not always make the same type of cut or use the same type of cigar cutter.
We will introduce you to the different types of cigar cutters and the type of cut they are associated with.
The double blade cigar cutter or guillotine
A double-blade cigar cutter or guillotine is a tool used to cut the end of a cigar to allow for a better grip and a more even burn. It usually consists of a handle and a stainless steel blade that can be manually operated to cut the cigar. Some guillotines have a double blade, which allows the cigar to be cut more precisely and cleanly. It is important to cut the cigar in such a way as not to damage the pipe, as this can affect the quality of the burn and the taste of the cigar.
The straight cut is the most common, especially for cigars with a small diameter. This straight and fast cut exposes both ends of the cigar.
The double-blade cigar cutter and the double-blade guillotine cigar cutter are preferred to the single-blade guillotine, as they generally make a cleaner cut.
However, guillotines are often the most practical, cheapest, and can be easily and safely carried in shirt or trouser pockets. Most people prefer this cut, as the whole end of the cap is exposed, allowing maximum smoke to escape with minimum build-up around the edge.
Guillotine cigar cutters work very well with almost all types of cigars, with the exception of those with a very wide band that exceeds the dimensions of the guillotine cutting area. In this case, it is better to use cigar scissors (for a straight cut) or another type of cigar cutter.
The cigar cutter punch
Also popular with cigar smokers, the punch cigar cutter comes in several types. It is used to drill a hole in the cigar cap. This is why it is also called a cigar drill.
This cut is preferred by some because it exposes the filler and binder less and reduces the risk of the tobacco ending up in the mouth. Critics of this cup say that the smaller hole does not allow as much smoke to come out and that the hole is often blocked by a build-up of saliva, tar and tobacco.
However, there are now punch cutters available that make holes with a diameter that avoids this. For cigars with a large diameter, several holes can be drilled to obtain a suitable draw. The punch cigar cutter is often used by cigar lovers who prefer a smoother and slower draw. It is also useful when you want to cut a cigar so as to leave a part of it unsmoked for later. However, it is important not to perforate the cigar too deeply, as this can affect the quality of the burn and the taste of the cigar.
They are less effective on certain cigar shapes such as torpedo or pyramid cigars.
The V-shaped cigar cutter
The last common type of cut is the V-cut. V-cutters are similar to guillotine cutters. The difference is that they cut a slit in the cap of the cigar instead of removing it completely, creating a clean-looking cut.
If you prefer, you can make two cuts to create a star-shaped cut. Some V-cutters penetrate the filler more deeply than straight cutters. However, care must be taken not to split the head of your cigar in order to smoke it properly.
This type of cigar cutter is particularly preferred for large cigars.
To use a V-cutter, simply place the cigar in the cutter opening and apply pressure to the blades until they cut the cigar. The resulting V-notch allows for a clean, precise cut that exposes a larger surface area of the cigar, which can improve the draw and overall smoking experience.
V-cutters are a popular choice among cigar enthusiasts because they offer a clean, precise cut and are easy to use. They are also compact and portable, making them a handy tool to have on hand for smoking cigars on the go.
Cigar scissors
Slightly different from conventional scissors, they are designed for the specific purpose of cutting cigars. The blades of these special scissors are made of high quality stainless steel, which guarantees clean cuts.
If you buy poor quality cigar shears, you risk damaging the wrapper of the cigar and ultimately your entire smoking session.
Cigar scissors are also used to make straight cuts and may be the better choice than a double-bladed cigar cutter to cut the cigar in the exact place you want.
To use cigar scissors, simply place the cigar in the opening of the scissors and cut the end by pressing the blades. Some cigar scissors have a spring mechanism that makes it easy to cut the cigar without having to apply too much pressure.
Cigar scissors are appreciated by cigar lovers for their precision and ease of use. They are also very elegant and can be a luxury smoking accessory. However, they can be a little harder to find and can be more expensive than other cigar cutters.
The shuriken cigar cutter
The latest and most innovative type of cigar cutter is the Shuriken.
The Shuriken cigar cutter contains six razor-sharp blades that cut slots around the cigar cap.
This new type of cigar cutter was introduced in 2011. They work particularly well on cigars with a short length. As the cutter has six sharp razor blades that make slits in the cigar, you will not lose any length on your cigar.
The draw can be controlled by biting lightly on the head of the cigar to open the slits further and allow more smoke to pass through.
Although it is possible for the slits to close if too much of your saliva softens the cap, this type of cut works very well in most cases.
Like the V-cut and the punch, the Shuriken cut provides a change from the usual straight cut.
Cutting a cigar without a cigar cutter
If you don't have a cigar cutter at hand, you can always try the classic bite method. However, this technique is not precise and can greatly damage your cigar if done incorrectly.
Another technique, which was used by Winston Churchill among others, is to moisten the cap of your cigar and make a hole in it with a long match.
A variation of this technique is to poke a few holes in the cap of your cigar with a toothpick. The draw will tell you whether or not you need to add more holes.
A cutter or a sharp knife can also be used as a cigar cutter. However, this is not as easy as it sounds and, as with the bite technique, you risk damaging the head if the cut is not made properly.
